Fiji—the Soft Coral Capital of the World!

Fiji is one of the most well-known places for snorkeling! When my family and I went to Fiji we were surprised at how many new and amazing things we saw there.

We saw a lot of coral in Fiji, including much more soft coral than we have seen in other places, because that is what Fiji is famous for. Our guides pointed out which coral were safe to touch, and they were all really soft and nice to touch!

We were delighted when we spotted Nemo (aka Clownfish aka Anemonefish) in many different kinds of soft corals…

The ones above were in long stringy soft coral.

Later during our snorkeling session we spotted some in shorter, stubbier, soft coral.

Towards the end of our swim, we saw one final batch of Clownfish in yellow soft coral. This one was closer to what was in the movie Nemo.

The soft coral tend to sway with the water currents, you can get a sense of that in this picture.

We observed all kinds of fish living in the soft coral. This blue variety liked to quickly dart about.

In addition to soft coral, we also saw plenty of traditional hard coral. They were colorful, and shimmered in the water.

Another thing that we saw a lot of in Fiji were Christmas tree worms. They are very colorful and look kind of like small Christmas trees, but when you put your hand near them, they quickly disappear into the coral! We spent a lot of time waving our hands in front of them and making them vanish into the coral.

There were also many colorful fish, as expected. There were even huge groups of fish swimming around us, sometimes even hundreds! We had a lot of fun chasing after interesting fish.

Fiji was definitely one the most distinct places to visit, I feel lucky we got to spend a few days there.
